Life’s Patina Mercantile & Cafe holds an Historical Afternoon Tea in Chester Springs

Guests gathered at the historic Jenny Lind House at Life’s Patina Mercantile & Café on Sunday afternoon for a Historical Afternoon Tea that celebrated the rich traditions, history, and enduring sense of community surrounding tea.

Before the presentation, guests were welcomed outside with a refreshing elderflower spritz as they gathered on the lawn, setting the tone for an elegant afternoon steeped in history and hospitality. The presentation, led by Life’s Patina Owner and Creative Director, Meg Veno, explored the origins of afternoon tea, from Catherine of Braganza introducing tea to the English court in the 17th century to Anna Russell, Duchess of Bedford, whose afternoon gatherings established the cherished tradition we know today. Guests also learned about the important role tea played as a setting for conversation, connection, and the exchange of ideas among women, including those who helped shape the women’s suffrage movement.

The afternoon tea service began with an elegant amuse bouche of cream of celery, setting the tone for a thoughtfully curated culinary experience. Each Life’s Patina tea menu is specially created by the Head Pastry Chef, with every gathering featuring a unique selection inspired by the season and the theme of the afternoon. Guests enjoyed a traditional three-tiered tea service featuring an assortment of savory bites, freshly baked treats, and delicate sweets, including classic tea sandwiches, bacon and chive quiche, freshly baked London Fog currant scones served with clotted cream, lemon curd, and housemade blackberry jam, along with seasonal desserts such as ginger cake with lemon sauce and vanilla butterfly tea cakes.

Each element of the menu reflected Life’s Patina’s signature attention to detail, blending the timeless traditions of afternoon tea with thoughtful, seasonal touches. Surrounded by the timeless charm of the Jenny Lind House, guests spent the afternoon sharing conversation, celebrating history, and embracing the elegance of a beloved tradition.
