PNC presents the Philadelphia International Flower Show,  produced by PHS.

The evening before the world-famous Philadelphia International Flower Show opened to the public on February 28, more than 3,000 fashion forward guests attended the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society’s exclusive black-tie event on Saturday, February 27. The 2010 Flower Show Preview Party celebrated the Show theme,  “Passport to the World”  and paid tribute to longtime PHS president, Jane G. Pepper who will retire on June 1.  The Preview Party is a charitable event that benefits PHS’s acclaimed urban greening program, Philadelphia Green.

 The Saturday event kicked off with a cocktail reception at 6 p.m. among the bountiful garden displays. A sumptuous selection of hors d’ouevres took inspiration from the different countries that are featured in Show exhibits including Brazil, South Africa, India, Singapore, the Netherlands and New Zealand, and a signature cocktail known as The GlobalTini. During the cocktail reception, Bollywood dancers and the musical group One, presented by World Café Live, entertained guests.
 
A ribbon cutting ceremony was held near the Show Exhibit Hall entrance, with a 28-foot-tall hot air balloon covered in nearly 80,000 freeze-dried flowers serving as a fitting backdrop to this floral journey around the world. The ceremony included Mayor Michael Nutter, Jane G. Pepper, president of the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society; Drew Becher, president-elect of the PHS, J. William Mills, president of the Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey region of PNC, presenter of the 2010 Show; PHS Council Chair John K. Ball, Flower Show Executive Chair Melinda Moritz, 2010 Preview Party Chair Roberta F. Dranoff, and Preview Party Vice Chair, Linda Galante.

St. Katharine of Siena plans ‘Girls’ Night Out’ on March 4 at Overbrook Golf Club

The St.  Katharine’s Spring Fundraiser will feature a Girl’s Night Out on Thursday, March 4 at Overbrook Golf Club from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. The evening will feature appetizers and open wine bar while showcasing fashions by Skirt of Bryn Mawr. The cost is $50 per person. There will also be more than 10 boutique vendors offering the latest in home, beauty and fashion. Proceeds from the event will benefit Saint Katharine of Siena School located in Wayne On Wednesday, February 25, Skirt hosted a Wine and Cheese night at their store in Bryn Mawr. Committee members previewed Skirt’s spring merchandise and made their selections for the Spring Fashion Show. ‘Expressions of Radnor’ opens at the Wayne Art Center

Expressions of Radnor on display from February 21 – March 6, 2010 held its opening reception: Sunday, February 21. Expressions of Radnor is an exhibition of Works by Radnor residents and is presented by Radnor Township and Wayne Art Center. The Wayne Art Center was established in 1930 as the first art center on the Main Line. In 1955, the Wayne Art Center purchased property on Maplewood Avenue and built a modest two-room facility. By the 1980’s, the center was outgrowing this facility too. A major capital campaign in the early 1990’s allowed the center to expand to its current layout, which includes five art studios, a new exhibition gallery, a gallery shop, additional office space and an enlarged parking lot.  (From left)  board president Jim Cobb and his wife Phyllis, artist Ann snyder and Wayne Art Center’s executive director Nancy Campbell posed with artist Brendan O’Neill whose painting Lavender Field is in the background.

Philadelphia Museum of Art Young Friends hold Winter Gala in the Great Stair Hall. More than 500 attend.

1. The Young Friends of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, a lively group of young professionals and art enthusiasts who support the Museum, held its annual black tie Winter Gala, on February 20, 2010 in the Great Stair Hall. To celebrate the masquerade theme, partygoers donned festive masks and were the first to experience a special unveiling of the spectacular Picasso and the Avant-Garde in Paris exhibition. The exhibit is on display from February 24 through April 25. Over 500 guests attended the stylish evening of dancing, exquisite food, and fabulous raffle prizes and auction items including fashion- and sports-themed gift packages. Proceeds from the gala will support the Young Friends’ mission to acquire new works of art for the Museum’s collection, and to aid the Museum’s conservation and preservation, as well as outreach and educational programming. The 2010 Winter Gala was chaired by Amanda Christoph from Philadelphia, Sandi Macan from Newton Square, and Greg Seitter from Ardmore. AHA Heart Ball draws more than 700 people to the annual gala at the Philadelphia Marriott Hotel

1. The American Heart Association held its annual Heart Ball at the Philadelphia Marriott Hotel in Philadelphia on Saturday, February 20. Manuel N. Stamatakis, president, Capital Management Group, received the Heart of Philadelphia award for his commitment to and passion for the City of Philadelphia during the Heart Ball, 2010, and Dr. William Frankl, professor of medicine (retired), Temple University Hospital,  received the William S. Cooper award presented to a medical professional whose contributions in their field improve the daily lives of those in the Philadelphia region. More than 700 people attended the event. The Heart Ball is one of Philadelphia’s premier black-tie events, attracting leading healthcare, business and civic leaders committed to raising funds for lifesaving research and education programs across the Delaware Valley. This year alone, the American Heart Association has invested more than $14 million through 110 active research grants in the region.
