1. on Friday, January 27, 2012, The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts held a preview party for Henry Ossawa Tanner: Modern Spirit. The event took place at PAFA’s Samuel M.V. Hamilton building and the exhibit will be on view through April 15, 2012. Henry Ossawa Tanner (1859-1937) was a mentor and role model for younger artists during his lifetime and has been a source of pride for many generations of artists since his death. An exhibition drawn largely from PAFA’s collection and supplemented by several major loans, ”After Tanner: African-American Artists Since 1940” broadly celebrates what Tanner’s career inspired and made possible in its wake. Tanner was a trailblazer, bravely choosing his own path and attaining international stature in the arts despite innumerable societal challenges. He was also an innovator of African-American genre painting and in religious subjects, where he made his most lasting and powerful contribution to art history. It is not unreasonable to assert that Tanner’s professional example together with the quality of his work made it possible for subsequent generations of African-American artists to pursue their aspirations in the art world and transform American art in the twentieth century. Tanner family members gathered around one of Henry Ossawa Tanner’s paintings ”L’Annonciation” during the opening reception. Pictured were (from left) Aaaron Lewis, Virginia Brown (left) and Michael and Lela Maupin (right).

1. On January 26, 2012, the Women’s Committee of the Philadelphia Museum of Art hosted a gala to celebrate the opening for Van Gogh Up Close. With décor and food paying homage to the paintings in the exhibition as well as Van Gogh’s native Netherlands and France, where he spent the last five years of his life, the evening stirred in its guests a van Gogh-like passion for art and nature. An artist of exceptional intensity, not only in his use of color and exuberant application of paint but also in his personal life, van Gogh was powerfully and fervently drawn to nature. Van Gogh Up Close presents some of the artist’s most daring and innovative still lifes and landscapes that have never been seen together and contributed to altering the course of modern painting. The exhibition features 45 paintings Van Gogh made in Paris, Arles, Saint-Rémy, and Auvers that concentrate on “close-ups” of flowers, trees, open fields, forest interiors, and countryside vistas. Among significant loans from major museums and private collections in Europe, North America, and Japan are works such as Almond Blossom, Sunflowers, Iris, Sheaves of Wheat, and Vineyard at Auvers. (From left) Timothy Rub, George D. Widener Director and CEO chatted with Susan Corbett and Gary Steuer during the Van Gogh Gala. Susan Corbett is Governor Tom Corbett’s wife and Gary Steuer is the Chief Cultural Officer for the City of Philadelphia.

2. The evening’s events included a Champagne reception and private tour of the exhibition with Joseph Rishel, The Gisela and Dennis Alter Senior Curator of European Painting before 1900, and Senior Curator of the John G. Johnson Collection and the Rodin Museum and Jennifer Thompson, The Gloria and Jack Drosdick Associate Curator of European Painting and Sculpture before 1900 and the Rodin Museum. There was a reception in the Great Stair Hall and exhibition preview in the Dorrance Galleries followed by a dinner in the East Balcony above the Great Stair Hall.
1. Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation hosted its sixth annual Lemon Ball presented by Volvo and The Toys ”R” Children’s Foundation with support from CIGNA. It took place at the Philadelphia Marriott Downtown Hotel. The evening featured the presentation of the Alex Scott Crystal Cup to Harry Rose of the Rose Group Corporation, for his continued support of the foundation. Liz and Jay Scott, the parents of the late Alexandra “Alex” Scott, also presented awards to Natalie and Albert Gigliotti of Franklin, New Jersey, Foundation Volunteers of the Year and 17-year-old Riley Miller of Bowling Green, Kentucky, who was named Stand Host of the Year. Alex Scott passed away at the age of eight from childhood cancer. When Alex, who was diagnosed just before her first birthday, was four, she told her parents she wanted to set up a front-yard lemonade stand. She wanted to give the money to doctors to help them find a cure. Her first “Alex’s Lemonade Stand” held with the help of her older brother Patrick, raised an astonishing $2,000 in one day. This inspired people everywhere to start their own lemonade stands, donating the proceeds to her cause. Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation was started by her parents in 2005 to continue the work that Alex began. Their mission is simple: to raise money for, and awareness of, childhood cancer causes, especially research into new treatments and cures. Also to encourage and empower others, especially children, to get involved and make a difference for children with cancer. Gala co-chairs Melanie and Billy King and Liz and Jay Scott paused for a photo during the cocktail reception.

1. On Wednesday, January 11, 2012, ”Thaw Out the Night” Cocktail Party and Benefit took place at The Saturday Club in Wayne. Business leaders and dazzling professionals gathered to savor dark chocolate fondue and sip delectable wines in The Saturday Club, a historic 1898 Landmark setting on the Main Line. The event also featured a silent auction with such items as a personal visit with the producers and actors of “The Good Wife” TV Show, autographed Eagles footballs, a year of in-home massages, French First Growth Bordeaux, and a day driving race cars. All proceeds benefit the Take Back Night Foundation. The TBTN Foundation is a 501(c)3 charity, formed in 1999 by Katie Koestner, who appeared on the cover of TIME Magazine at age 18 as the first woman to speak out nationally and publically as the victim of date rape. Take Back The Night seeks to end sexual violence in all of its forms including sexual assault, sexual abuse, dating violence and domestic violence. TBTN empowers survivors in the healing process and inspires responsibility in all. Their goal is to create safe communities and respectful relationships through awareness events and initiatives. Sponsors Brian Good (left) and Nicholas DeStephanis (right) of the DGKGroup. P.C., joined TBTN founder, Katie Koestner (center), during the benefit event.
